The London-based mysterious producer drops an anticipated album

Spanning generations of disco, house, pop, and psychedelia, ‘The Broken House Project’ is the debut album from secretive, London-based producer GIVE LOVE. Loyal to the experimental spirit of sample culture, GIVE LOVE takes its name from the pure intent inherent to sample culture: to give back love to lost and forgotten records.

Running a gamut of approaches on their debut LP, ranging from expertly tweaked dancefloor edits to wildly creative classical flips, lethargic, Dilla-esque beats and celebratory sonic collage, cuts from the LP have already been heard on BBC 6Music’s ‘New Music Fix’ and from Jaguar on Radio 1, who declared previous single ‘Worthy’ to be “world class”. Now, the full spectrum of ‘The Broken House Project’ is unveiled just in time for the summer sunshine it basks in.

The result of many years of sample digging and clearance, the bleary-eyed soul vocal and birdsong of opening track ‘Sunshine’ underscores that ‘The Broken House Project’ will be a lifting journey for listeners, just as it has represented a major labour of love for the artist. Like tuning from an AM radio and into a brighter future, ‘In Your Mind’ slips into digital bliss, its lilting, tripping vocal drifting upon beautiful synthesis. And while many of GIVE LOVE’s finest samples are untraceable, flipped beyond recognition, ‘Weak Knights’ raises eyebrows with delight upon its first chord, transforming an iconic piano piece into a hazy garden of delight with little more than a simple breakbeat.

‘Worthy’ sees GIVE LOVE go for broke with the record’s most catchy and timeless tune, with a subtly optimistic sentiment launching you into an emotional journey. ‘Day Breaks’ transports listeners forward with a four-four rhythm underpinning a melancholy arrangement of contemporary deep house, bursting into breakbeat catharsis. ‘Almost Always’ catches aching feet in a billowing, authentically Balearic cloud.

‘The Most Climactic Part, The Strongest Part, The Funkiest Part Of The Record’ offers props to a legacy of true sample pioneers, cutting and chopping with appropriate glee’, before GIVE LOVE carves space to pay tribute to one of their key club influences on ‘French Touch’, an unapologetically jackin’ affair that blends heavy acid lines with the elegant vocals that represent the album’s beating heart.

‘This’, ‘My Heart Keeps Wandering’ and ‘Find Love’ make a romantic final stretch to the LP, distilling the diverse elements across the album into a spectacular, wide-eyed nu-disco conclusion.

“And now, a special treat… another song”, intones the voice at the beginning of ‘Another Song / Here For You / World Between Us’, kicking off a reprise, delivering no less than five, masterfully interwoven in a style that recalls the genre-spanning ‘plunderphonic’ creativity of The Avalanches, crossfading between energies. As such, ‘Peter and the Waltz’ offers a final moment of respite drawing ‘The Broken House Project’ to its soft, orchestral conclusion.

Fresh off the back of the release of his groove ridden ‘Reachin’ Out’ EP, we caught up with Funky French League’s Young Pulse to take a deeper look into this infectious collection of work, the history of the Funky French League collective and more.

MI4L – Let’s start with Funky French League! How did the collective come together, and what was the vision behind it?

Young Pulse – We started Funky French League six or seven years ago with DaBeull, DJ Asko, MonsieurWilly, Uncle T, Woody Braun, Chaps, and myself. We all knew each other as DJs and often found ourselves on the same line-ups for funk, disco, and groove nights in Paris. It made sense to take things further by organizing our own parties and events—that’s how the collective was born.

Shortly after, we started putting out mixtapes, edits, and original productions while securing deals with major companies to release official compilations and remixes. That’s also when we decided to launch our own label.

MI4L – What are the benefits of running a label as a collective rather than solo? How does that impact creativity and collaboration?

Young Pulse – Everyone in the crew brings a unique perspective and skill set, which helps us all grow. In the studio for example, this synergy leads to great results. For example, Woody Braun is very creative but doesn’t have my mixing and mastering skills, while MonsieurWilly brings yet another approach. Together, it all makes for a great combo.

MI4L – Your new EP Reaching Out blends boogie and electro-funk with a modern twist. What inspired the overall sound of this project?

Young Pulse – I was honored to receive praise from the legendary Arthur Baker, who told me that “the EP really captures that late ’70s – early ’80s sound.” A big part of my record collection comes from that era, so it has definitely influenced my productions in some way. But like all my work, everything came naturally—I didn’t plan to make a track in a specific way or start with a clear idea in mind. If I can dance to my own tracks, I know they’re ready to be released, and that’s exactly the case with this fresh new EP.

MI4L – You worked with Fleur De Mur and Wayata on this EP—how did those collaborations come about? What did they bring to the table?

Young Pulse – Fleur De Mur and I first connected while working on my single “Smooth Sweet Talker” for Glitterbox. She later came to my studio in Paris, where we listened to the production I had done, and she started writing lyrics. It all happened really fast—she’s an amazing songwriter, artist, and collaborator.

As for Wayata, I had already worked with him as a studio musician on a few of my tracks. He’s a talented young musician who plays multiple instruments, and I wanted to feature him on a track beyond just a studio credit. I came up with the idea for the song, and he started laying down guitar, bass, and keys in my studio. The process was quick. Later on, I added the lyrics and vintage vocoder lines, but by the end of that session, 90% of the work was already done.

MI4L – The title track Reachin’ Out feels like a perfect mix of classic and contemporary funk. What was the creative process behind it?

Young Pulse – I came up with the synth bass idea about 10 minutes before Wayata was supposed to arrive at the studio and quickly played a beat to go with it. As soon as he got there, we started laying down his parts—mainly bass, guitar, and a few keyboard sections.

I really wanted to keep that raw ’80s electro-funk feel, with a touch of Rick James, Kleeer, and Gap Band. Then, I wrote the vocal parts and used a vintage Roland vocoder to stay true to that classic vibe. We went through a few different mixes until we were both fully satisfied, and that’s how Reachin’ Out was born.

MI4L – Love Addict has a great groove—what’s the story behind this track, and why did you choose to do an extended version?

Young Pulse – The whole production was already finished when I suggested to Fleur that she sing on it while she was traveling in Europe. She came to my studio, and we started working on it.

What I find interesting in the extended version is its long intro, inspired by early ’80s club tracks and remixes from pioneers like Larry Levan, Tony Humphries, François K, and all the original cats in the game. The intro gradually leads into the main song. Fleur perfectly captured the vibe—we jammed in the studio until we found the right angle, and then she wrote the lyrics, adding her magic touch with a modern pop feel. That’s how Love Addict was born.

MI4L – Lose Control has a high-energy vibe—how did this track take shape, and what were your influences for it?

Young Pulse – I was in the countryside for a music residency when I produced Lose Control. I actually made two tracks with a similar bassline, and this is the one I decided to keep.

At first, I wrote a storytelling-style song in French, but then I tried another version in English with a different story—and that’s the one you hear in the final version. On the day I was supposed to deliver the track, I jammed a bit on my Prophet and kept adding synth parts, which ended up making the track even stronger and funkier.

My influences on this one range from anything early ’80s—from Prince to the Bar-Kays—somewhere between funk, electro-funk, and boogie. And yes, that’s me singing on it.

MI4L – When working on music, do you start with a melody, a groove, or something else? How do your tracks usually come to life?

Young Pulse – It really depends… Sometimes I start with a beat, other times I’m just playing around on my synths, and inspiration comes naturally. A lot of ideas also come from me singing instrumental parts, which I then record.

I have a good instinct for finding the right balance between vocals and music, so I usually record everything first. Then, I decide what needs to be reworked by musicians or singers. Once everything is in place, the mixing process begins—another form of creativity that brings the final recording to life.

MI4L – What are your plans for the rest of the year? More solo projects, Funky French League releases, or live shows?

Young Pulse – I’ve recently dropped some new tracks on labels like Toy Tonics, Dippin’ Records, and Frappé, with even more on the way! I’m working on remixes, edits, and new releases on FFL, plus collaborating with incredible artists like Barbara Tucker, Jamie 3:26, and Danou P, just to name a few. I’m also in the process of creating my first album, which will be 100% originals, blending disco and house music. Keep an eye out for me at more shows and festivals, in addition to my monthly night, DISCOvery, at Paris’ soulful DJOON club!

MI4L – Finally, what’s one record or artist that has been inspiring you lately? Any recommendations for fans of your sound?

Young Pulse – Saucy Lady is one of the most complete artists I truly appreciate in today’s boogie scene, but honestly, I can’t name just one. I’m also a huge fan of what Ezel is putting out in the soulful house realm, and I’m loving the sound of my man and bass player, Daniel Monaco, from Italy. Let’s not forget the Space Grapes label—one of the best things to happen in the underground disco scene in recent years. Their releases from live acts like Another Taste and Jeroboam (aka Echoes Of) are top-notch. In fact, we’ve got a solid party, EAST SIDE FUNK, in collaboration with Jeroboam (aka Echoes Of) and Funky French League on the east side of Paris, where we vibe with these amazing acts. So, if you’re in Paris, don’t miss it!

Young Pulse’s ‘Reachin’ Out’ EP is out now and available here.

After releasing Enkiama earlier in the year through his own Dynamite Disco Club, India’s Disco Dictator, Stalvart John, returns to Wind Horse Records with Nights of Sahra, and brings forth fresh and infectious energy through a funky bassline that is layered with a melodic arrangement, which is both smooth and uplifting.

Off the back of his latest funky release, Stalwart talks us through some records that helped shape his sound that you hear today…

Cerrone – Cerrone’s Paradise (Joey Negro’s Full Club Mix)

This track is one of my all-time favorite disco house remixes. It’s hard to think of a better way to capture the sound I love to play than this. Dave Lee completely elevates Cerrone’s iconic original, turning it into a dancefloor masterpiece. Not a single moment in this track feels dull or repetitive—it’s an epic journey from start to finish. It was listening to this that made me truly realize the power of musicality in dance music.

Jasper Street Co. – Paradise (Danny Krivit Edit)

This track is something I keep coming back to, time and time again, to uplift my soul. A modern classic from Jasper Street Co., with Danny Krivit bringing his deep dancefloor expertise to the mix. He masterfully preserves the soulful power of the gospel vocals while maintaining that dancefloor energy. It’s a beautiful fusion that never fails to move me.

Oden & Fatzo x Poppy Baskcomb – Tell Me What You Want (Extended Mix)

I’ve been in love with Oden & Fatzo ever since Lady Love dropped. These guys are taking the sound I adore and pushing it into a new era—especially with this track. It really resonated with me and made me embrace the idea that ‘simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.’ They’ve mastered the art of keeping it clean yet incredibly impactful.

Fatboy Slim – Praise You (Purple Disco Machine Extended Remix)

A true nu-disco classic remix. Purple Disco Machine is an artist who’s been instrumental in bringing the nu-disco sound to a wider audience, and his music has all the right ingredients to become timeless. This track, in particular, inspired me to craft more interesting basslines with a sense of simplicity. I love it because, despite its simplicity, it keeps the groove alive and never loses its energy.

Letta Mbulu – Down By The River

I first discovered South African singer Letta Mbulu through Normalizo, and from there, I fell in love with this absolute gem. It’s an iconic downtempo disco track, and her rich, choral vocals transport me to a headspace that fuels my inspiration. This is one of the most unique and exotic disco jams you’ll ever hear—pure gold.

Minnie Riperton – Les Fleurs

While this track didn’t directly influence my sound, it has been a crucial part of my personal growth and the journey I’m on right now. Every time I listen to it, I’m reminded that it’s okay to start over. I play it daily, often ending my morning walks with it. The lyrics are so powerful—if they don’t inspire every human being, I’m not sure what will.

“Inside every man, lives the seed of a flower

If he looks within, he finds beauty and power

Ring all the bells, sing and tell the people

Everywhere that the flower has come

Light up the sky with your prayers of gladness

And rejoice for the darkness is gone

Throw off your fears let your heart beat freely

At the sign that a new time is born”

The Disco Express is about to release a Best of 2024 EP which is packed full of soulful goodness. We got a chance to talk to the label boss man Tom Lilly about the label beginnings, what it’s like running the growing imprint, and what’s cooking in 2025 for The Disco Express.

Interview with Bustin’ Loose

We are bigs fans of The Disco Express here. Tell us a little the label.

Thanks so much! and thanks for having me. The Disco Express started as a monthly East London loft party in 2017. We hosted some phenomenal parties at Shoreditch Platform, inviting guests like: Dave Lee, Crazy P, Glenn Underground, Étienne de Crécy, Eli Escobar, Toy Tonics, Jacques Renault, Felix Dickinson, Bellaire and lots more.

When clubs closed in 2020, I decided to transform TDE into a record label. Four years later, we’re up to 80 releases and versatile collective based across the world..

Benny (Crystal Touch) hosts the parties in Amsterdam, Roland Cespedes in NYC, Monsieur Van Pratt in Mexico City, Magnolia in Paris, Matteo (Sparkling Attitude) in Italy and most recently Ron (Old As Funk) in São Paulo, Brazil. Closer to home, myself and Tatiana organise the events in London and Berlin.

Our ethos is to bring positive, uplifting and original music to 21st century dance floors. We endeavour to provide a platform for burgeoning talent, as well being a hotspot for household names. The Disco Express parties take place far and wide, with established long-term residencies in Paris, Berlin, London, New York City and Mexico City.

What is your experience of running a label prior to TDE?

The Disco Express is my first shot at running a record label. I’m lucky enough to be part of a network of supportive friends and family who filled me with the confidence to do what I’m doing.

I’ve been running nights for ten years, so I have party planning experience. Releases on labels like Toy Tonics, the Basement and Whiskey Disco gave me the basic understanding of how the signing process works from an artist perspective.

At the beginning the main challenge was navigating where to start and how to do it. You know, finding a distributor, the artists, when to release, promotion strategy and so on. Luckily I’m a graphic designer so I could knock out artwork pretty speedily. Once I got into the swing of things with a routine it all became very clear and natural. Having a plan, schedule and consistency is key!

You are an active party planner. Tell us a little about your party and its ethos.

For a long time it’s been a goal of mine to throw a party every weekend worldwide. The idea was to establish residencies in multiple cities, sharing our vibe and consistently growing our global community. It was an idea that stemmed from spending too much time watching basketball in lockdown, particularly Michael Jordan’s ‘The Last Dance’ documentary and the notion of franchising. It’s fairly ambitious I have to say!

At this moment of writing, we have 5 solid residencies set up across London, Paris, Berlin, NY, Mexico City and are looking to facilitate even more.

In a time of conflict, war and tempestuous aggression we think it’s important to share positivity through music. Our party and ethos is heavily inspired by the hedonistic jaunts of the 70’s New York club scene. Inclusivity, community, escapism and originality. This is the vibe we aim to create. For a few hours every weekend people can get down to the uplifting sounds of The Disco Express!

Is Disco alive you think, as much as it always has been?

Disco never died 😉

Who are you heroes in Disco past and present?

If we’re just talking disco music I’d have to say: Willie Hutch, David Mancuso, Masayoshi Takanaka, Nile Rodgers, Prince, KC & The Sunshine Band, Kiki Gyan, Teddy Pendergrass, Sylvester and Donna Summer.

My musical influences stretch further and would love to mention: Nina Simone, Fela Kuti, Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk, Nightmares On Wax, Confidence Man, Jay Electronica, Crazy P and Joe Claussell.

What are the essential ingredients that get a release signed to your label?

The music has to have feeling and soul. Nothing too computerised or robotic. If it’s made with live instruments that’s great! We love authenticity and collaborating with singers and musicians. In a looming world of AI, here at TDE we concentrate on the analogue and the imperfect. It’s what makes us human. Part of our ethos is to harness the uplifting vibe and energy of classic 70’s disco music, 90’s house and reinvent it for 21st century dance floors. Bands from The Disco Express like Golden Gate, Magnolia, Rayowa and The Wild Violets do this brilliantly.

I don’t care about the amount of followers you have, if the music is good that’s what matters. It’s all about originality.

This new release is a window to your output for 2024. Talk us through a couple of highlights for you and the label this year?

Of course, our Best of 2024 compilation is a true testament to the talent and diversity of The Disco Express. We purposefully decided to make it eclectic so it showcases the wide breadth of of the label. It’s got a bit of everything.. House, Italo, Nu-Disco, Jackin’ and Soul.

This year there’s been so many good moments, its hard to say! For me though, to see The Disco Express grow across the world has been pretty amazing. In 2024, our events have taken place for the first time in: Rome, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Aberdeen, Cuenca, Mexico City, Montréal and Manila. Performing to a sold out Alcazar in Rome was a choice favourite.

Playing at Boogietown Festival in front of 2000 people was especially fun. Goes without saying too, playing at Glastonbury for the second consecutive year was pretty cool.. and our 75th Release special featuring four legends of disco (John Morales, The Reflex, Hot Toddy, Dr Packer) was pretty dope.

How does The Disco Express plan to take the label forward in 2025?

We’re firing up our engines and are taking TDE to new heights in 2025! Keeping to our schedule of a party-a-weekend is ideal. Adding more residencies to our global franchise too. It will also be our 100th release in 2025 so we have some mega plans for that! In March, we celebrate our 8th Birthday with a month long series of crazy parties! Its safe to say this train ain’t stopping anytime soon..

Bicoastal disco aficionado, Super Elevation label/shop owner, and all-around legend of the scene, Tom Noble brings forth a sprawling project 15 years in the making with his House of Spirits full length LP on Razor-N-Tape.

Slow-cooked over more than a decade, the eight tracks that stretch across this double 12” pack are the realization of Tom’s unique vision of modern dancefloor soul, with lush live instrumentation and deviously catchy hooks. Boasting a near encyclopedic knowledge of decades of club music, Tom draws on influences like Patrick Adams & the Mizell Brothers to build a sound that’s both reverent to the past, but feels extremely fresh and immediately timeless.

Rising musical visionary Reuben Vaun Smith has announced the release of his latest album, Land of Music, a vibrant and atmospheric collection of tracks that transport listeners to a tropical soundscape of chilled beats, lush synths, and laid-back vocal musings. Remarkably, Smith recorded the entire album aboard a fishing trawler docked in a marina in Gibraltar, transforming the tight space into a creative sanctuary.

Blending dreamy synthesizer pads, groovy beats, and smooth vocals, Land of Music evokes a relaxing, high-vibe journey from start to finish. Collaborations on the album enhance its eclectic sound, with standout performances from vocalist Lucy Saddler, who lends her ethereal voice to “Lost in Space” and the title track “Land of Music.” Additionally, label-mate and guitar virtuoso Chico Mann brings his signature funky guitar licks, infusing the album with fresh energy and dynamic flair.
