Calling all aspiring electronic music DJs and producers! Beat Retreat, a week-long music education retreat offering a unique experience for up-and-coming music producers and DJs, announces their spring dates to commence on March 6th-11th, 2024, taking place in the kitesurfing capital of the Caribbean – Cabarete, Dominican Republic.

We caught up with Beat Retreat founder DJ Neekola to discuss the spring edition and its mentors, giving back to community, her intentions and purpose of launching the retreat and more!

This March you’ll be hosting the spring edition of Beat Retreat, in Cabarete Beach, Dominican Republic. What was the inception of Beat Retreat and what initially sparked your interest and purpose to launch it?

When the pandemic hit, both my DJ and events businesses shut down. I was out of work and feeling super lost. I had lost my sense of purpose, direction, drive, identity. During this dark time, I got a random request from a friend to come and DJ in the Dominican Republic. I never had an interest in visiting the DR, but I took a chance and just did it. I needed a change, anything to get me out of the downward spiral I was in.

I went, and I ended up staying in the DR for weeks, months, now three years! I had fallen in love with the way of life, the community, the beauty of the island, the culture and the athletic and healthy lifestyle. This shift gave me a new perspective on my old life and how I wasn’t truly fulfilling my purpose of being a creative.

I realized so many people in my industry need this shift, this rebirth of creativity and wellness. I decided to share this experience with my industry first, starting from individual experiences at my bed and breakfast on the beach, to now a 25 person experience that I host at Paradise Project – a lovely little resort equipped with mixing rooms and a state of the art recording studio.

DJ Neekola

Each edition, key mentors from the music industry will attend to participate in the workshops and lessons throughout the week. Who are the mentors for the Spring edition, and what topics will they be discussing in the workshops?

Enamour – an international DJ and producer who has an undeniable global presence in the electronic space, known for creating masterful soundscapes with no boundary of range, and also a mentor through Patreon. He will share all of his top tricks and techniques for getting inspired in the studio, being creative and innovative, and coming up with ideas.

Atish – a well known and accomplished DJ, label owner, mentor and music producer who’s achieved so much in a short amount of time will be discussing how to transition your music hobby into a career. He will delve into things such as finances, mindset, strategy, building a team and a brand all from the perspective of ensuring we remain authentic to our own voice.

Nick Garcia – a DJ who works for Insomniac Music Group in A&R, will be going over all the details on how to get signed by a bigger record label. He will discuss everything from the pros and cons of record labels, how to approach and communicate with labels, how to prepare demos and more.

Saeed Younan – a 30 year veteran in the industry who has been named one of the Top 100 DJ’s in the industry, runs his own label, has produced heaps of well known music and performed at some of the best festivals in the world has a lot to share. He will focus on marketing yourself as an artist in social media, public relations and more.

Last but not least, we have myself, DJ Neekola – I’ve been in the industry for 15 years performing, producing music, creating characters and building companies around the event industry. My talk will focus on how the new generation of up-and-coming music producers can create music with an impact to change the world for the better using positive lyrics, chord progressions and frequencies in their productions.

“I’m super excited to pass on my knowledge and connect with mentees at Beat Retreat. I’m hoping my 30 years in the business will shed some light on the obstacles and hurdles that can be avoided.” – Saeed Younan, DJ + Producer

Beat Retreat is a 6 day all-inclusive music education experience in paradise. What else is on the agenda for the week?

  • We engage in a variety of educational activities, while simultaneously fostering a sense of fun and community. Two meals are arranged in town on the beach, providing opportunities to acquaint ourselves with each other and explore Cabarete.
  • We’ll head to the Inspire DR after-school program, participants will connect with local emerging DJs and producers.
  • Guest speaker Manuel Salazar, a 30 year military veteran and clinical worker specialized in healing arts and trauma will lead discussions on navigating boundaries, self-care, and mental health in the music industry. A beach group meditation will also be part of the session.
  • Optional excursions include surfing lessons, kite surfing, trapeze and/or aerial silk lessons, artist photo shoots, and additional recording studio time.
  • Collaborative activities include scheduled one-on-one mentorship sessions, a collaborative studio session, two mixing studios for independent or joint work, and an exciting catamaran party where one fortunate participant will have the opportunity to DJ alongside all the mentors on the boat.

As an artist and entrepreneur yourself in the entertainment industry, what are you hoping the participants will walk away with post-Beat Retreat?

Pursuing a career as a DJ or music producer can feel overwhelming and lonely. The biggest thing I want to see happen here is that the artists walk away with a new sense of confidence to be able to pursue their dreams in this industry due to the knowledge, and most importantly the community and connections they’ve built during this experience.

Giving back to the local community is always so meaningful and fulfilling. Can you tell us how Beat Retreat is involved with the non-for-profit InspireDR?

Since the pandemic, I’ve collaborated with Inspire DR to establish a DJ and music production program for kids after school. The program has been successful, cultivating a group of aspiring young DJs eager to pursue music careers.

To enhance the program, I’ve engaged one mentor at a time, a professional in the music production world, by offering accommodations at my bed and breakfast in exchange for teaching a class or seeking equipment donations. This connection allows the youth to meet international professionals, fostering inspiration and support beyond their community. Now that I have a group of professionals coming to the DR, it’s more opportunity for the kids to make connections, get inspired and meet professionals!

The impact is evident. Our last retreat, Julian Castenada, the founder of WAYU records, was so inspired that he decided to contribute a compilation album featuring work from Beat Retreat participants. All proceeds from the album will directly benefit the school, showcasing the positive outcomes when everyone comes together.

Beat Retreat offers a sense of community for all participants. Will the community of Beat Retreat continue afterwards? What can be expected post-retreat?

The sense of community is the best souvenier you’ll carry from the retreat – even more valuable than the Beat Retreat gift bags! Participants and mentors alike can maintain ongoing support through exclusive groups designated for Beat Retreat participants. We’re also capturing mentor discussions for access on our Beat Retreat portal, exclusively available to participants for convenient recaps. Additionally, our DJ sets are recorded and shared on Soundcloud to promote artists, while fostering mutual support on social media.

Our most recent retreat is still going strong with collaborations for the WAYU compilation, constructive song feedback, joint promotion efforts, event bookings, and more. With each successive retreat, this supportive community grows larger. So, why not join now and seize the opportunity to be part of this expanding network in the intimate setting of our retreats?

Lords of the low-end, Walker & Royce, enlist hip-hop queen Sophiegrophy for the self-assured heater ‘No Drama’, out now via Club Sweat. In true Walker & Royce fashion, the pair impart their glorious glitch laden techniques onto a dark canvas complete with thumping bass energy and pulsating synth swirls. Sirens distort and oscillate throughout in a most sophisticated manner, demonstrating Walker & Royce’s production prowess and depth of experience. Increasing in intensity, the surging soundscape converges into the upper frequencies ready to set the room alight, only for Sophiegrophy to enter and stake her claim as master of the dance floor with her ever-evocative and rousing vocals. ‘No Drama’ is the mantra, and this all-powerful trio are here to make sure you live it.

Speaking to the new single Walker & Royce note, “We started the track before touring started up again. It took us some time to refine it and get it dialled in since we weren’t able to play it out. Sophie worked her magic once it was ready and put into words what we were all thinking and feeling. It’s always a pleasure working with Sophie, she is so talented.”

Sophiegrophy sums it up short and sweet, “We are having fun all year, no chit-chat, no back & forth, no drama”.

We were also able to catch up with Walker & Royce and had a sneak peak into the studio showing off some of the equipment/instruments currently being used by the duo – which doesn’t happen often!

Novation Bass Station 2 – ‘The main lead synths are all the Novation Bass Station 2. We’ve been using this thing for years, it’s so versatile and easy to use, it’s chunky and sounds good in a mix, you can’t beat it for the money!’

Sylenth – ‘Yes Sylenth of all things. It’s been around forever but it’s very simple and easy to get a riser or background pad out of. Cuts right through the mix. This is like, at least four sounds in the main mix.’

Waves R Bass – ‘We sometimes use this to bring out the character of basslines where otherwise it would just sound like all sub. Instead of using saturation, which might make the bass sound different, this just makes it more throaty or richer sounding.’

Valhalla ÜberMod – ‘Valhalla ÜberMod is a fantastic delay plugin, it barely uses any CPU, we use it commonly on long repeating delays that carry into the breakdown. It cuts through the mix really well and again, it’s really simple and fast to get what you want out of it.’

Oszillos Mega Scope – ‘This lets us see exactly what the waveform looks like on something, for example the kick drum. Since a lot of the parts of a track might be coming from samplers or have additional processing you might not realize how long the tails are, or if a sound is way off DC, or if it’s not as compressed as the meters imply. In No Drama it helped us get the kick to sound tight.’

Hailing from New Delhi, Hamza has attained a reputation as a pioneer of the house scene in India and one of the more innovative and exciting producers today. Hamza’s diverse international sound is influenced from his strong musical background as well as growing up in India and traveling the world, living in Paris, Boston, and New York. Early in his journey, exposure to renowned house DJs such as Terry Francis, Dave Mothersole, DJ Heather, and Danny Tenaglia inspired Hamza to create his own electronic dance productions. Soon he found a unique style of house music combining deep, tribal, and funky sounds with strong world music influences.

Hamza set up his own label Wind Horse Records to further nourish this growing production repertoire. While in New York, Hamza did his Masters in Music Business at New York University, which gave him a very strong foundation and insight into how to creatively promote his own music. Wind Horse Records, the first Indian house music label, is a major part of that vision. From its first release Wind Horse quickly earned the notice and accolades of many notable fans including Dubfire (Deep Dish), Peter Kruder (Kruder & Dorfmeister), Richie Hawtin, Quentin Harris, and Tom Findlay (Groove Armada)

He shares a glimpse into the studio space where he makes his magic!

Maselec MEA 2

Great for EQ’ing. I don’t use it in the mix stage. I use it after words when I work with stems to put the finishing touches. Kicks are always tweaked with this piece of gear. Basslines are always improved and all stems are passed through this just to see if I can get something extra after my mixdown.

Manley Vari Mu Compressor/Limiter

The compressor is magic. The way it glues things is incredible. Really makes all your drums come together. Also all the Music elements are all glued in and tightened really nicely.

System 8

There are 3 different Roland Keyboard Sounds that have all been inserted into this one piece so there are many options to play around with. I am not such a real synth guy but when I don’t feel like recording live musicians and sampling, then I feel this is great as I become the musician in the room. There are many knobs to manipulate your sound and it’s really easy to use.

TR8S

This is a really fun piece of gear. You can import sounds from outside and then mix them with the inbuilt sounds. The scatter and fx functions are insane. Drum Programming is really easy and sub step functions really allow you to make complex patterns with ease. In addition to drum programming you can also program musical patterns so the TR8S is more like a Groove box that allows you to do a lot more than Drums. Basslines are also easy to make from this machine.

TB3

Classic piece of Gear. Everyone needs one of these. You can make some really outhere patterns with the TB3. In addition to basslines. you can make other patterns as well that can be used to enhance the groove of the track to push the rhythm.

A Life dedicated to music. Beautifully talented Melchior Sultana, Born in Malta, Is a composer and multi-instrumentalist. Growing up in an atmosphere of rich traditions, culture, and arts in the middle of the Mediterranean can deeply sculpt a spirit. Melchior Sultana represents music as an art with no boundaries.

Everything started by understanding the various forms of sound. This interest in “sounds” gradually led to experience, study, knowledge and to an ongoing evolution of an artist. His experiences and knowledge throughout his musical career led to the belief that music is a form of art that needs to remain pure. this means that music and art in general should reflect one’s true inner voice and artistic execution and not be infected by non-artistic entities. This philosophy was carried out and is being practiced through out his music.

As a multi-instrumentalist playing Guitar, Piano and Bass, Melchior Sultana is involved in various projects from classical to contemporary to Live band and electronic music productions. Melchior Sultana performed live at some of the most prestigious places from Cafe Del Mar in Malta to Panorama Bar, Berghain, IPSE in Berlin, Tresor, and Rex Club Paris. Previous works show the wide musical vocabulary of this artist and his open-minded approach to music.

MPC

The MPC has always been present in my setups from studio to Live, At this point i almost feel like there would be something missing without it, The workflow is super straightforward and simple and it feels like an actual instrument, Most of the times this is where everything starts, From building a groove from scratch or record in a progression or melody, A true extension of the soul

Rhodes

From the very first moment I heard a Rhodes I fell in love with sound and the vibe, This is probably the true instrument I could never do without and is one of the reasons i love House music, I remember as a kid listening to mixes by Owen Jay where at the time he was playing alot of jazzy house records and I would just stand there listening to the amazing sound of the Rhodes

RD9

Out of all the recent production of clones that came out i say this is what i was waiting for the most, The 909 is such a classic sound and the definition of House music, I have owned other 909 emulations in the past but this has to be the best one and that captures exactly the 909 vibe

Korg Monologue

This synth was a surprise, I never imagined how much i would end up loving this little beast when i got it, I can sequence on the fly, Create sounds, Do solos and melodies and then turn it into an acid machine and jam for days, Killer!

TD3

Thanks to the Monologue i learned to appreciate the sound of the 303, I never considered the 303 as an instrument i can add to my setup but gradually it has became an important sound in my constant evolution as a producer, Another classic!

If there’s anyone who knows how to throw the dance floor into complete mayhem, it’s Los Angeles-based DJ, RYBO. The young, up-and-coming house prodigy has been a staple member of the Desert Hearts family for the past three years, taking part in not only the festival itself, but also a number of one-off parties, showcases, and City Hearts tour stops.

1.) ARP-2600fs Semi Modular Synthesizer
This was always my dream synth especially after borrowing an original Tonus model from a friend. I finally got my hand on this one when Korg reissued it as an exact clone of the original 2600 only with a few modern features like midi and xlr out. This synth has a wide range of things you can do with it like fat warm bass sounds, squelchy mono leads and trippy arpeggios to name a few I enjoy using it for. Not to mention that its semi-modular making the possiblitys virtually endless.
2.) Roland Juno-106 Synthesizer
I got this as my first analog synth from a buddy who found it at a flea market for $75 which is the steal of a lifetime. He was also was so nice to give it to me for the same price he found it so needless to say this is one synth I’ll never get rid of. When I received it she was pretty banged up so I sent it out to synth spa to fully refurbish it. I really love this synth for the pure simplicity of it but don’t be fooled its a real power house. It ranged anywhere from dreamy pads, lush chords to thick buttery basses. Chances are you’ve heard this synth in some of your favorite tracks.
3.) Midas Venice 32 Channel Analog Mixer
This mixer is the mainframe of my studio. All of my instruments are connected via patch bay which feeds into the mixer then directly out of the mixer into my audio interface thus being able to capture my recordings. I really like having an outboard mixer in the studio because I use a lot of outboard fx, it has a nice eq and adds a bit of warmth when running anything through it.
4.) DSI OB-6 Synthesizer
This is definitely on of my favorite synths, I use this probably more than any other pieces of gear in my studio. If I could only have one instrument on a desert island this would be it. It has a really cool chord feature on it plus a really good arpeggiator and sequencer. You can basically get any sound you want out of this thing, you name it and it will produce.
5.) Akai MPC3000 Sampler
I always use this for my core drums then I’ll use my drum machines for percussion and fillers. I really like the MPC 3000 because its a 16bit sampler and it gives a nice bit crush distortion adding a nice punch and crunch allowing for the sounds to cut through the mix. Also you can’t beat that mpc swing!
6.) Cyclone TT-303 Bass Bot
This is a TB-303 clone is made by a French company called Cyclone Analogic. I love it because its very similar to the original 303 but with midi and a few other features making the sequencer more user friendly. I got this synth because I’ve always been a sucker for a nice 303 sound. I try to incorporate it all my productions wether it being a short synth hit or an acid baseline or lead. You can hear this synth on my latest EP I did for Desert Hearts Records ‘Survive’ being on both the A and B side tracks.

For his latest endeavor, RYBO offers fans two new originals and a Remix from Eskuche on the Survive EP. This undeniable party mix brings left-field dance sensibilities to bare with straight-up funk.

London production trio Jaded return to Club Sweat with the release of an epic rhythm-filled double A-side “Overtime / Physically”. The house-centric trinity present ‘Overtime’, a bustling yet smooth offering .On the two sides to their release, Jaded said, “With this EP we wanted to showcase the 2 sides of Jaded. The light vs The dark! One side is our uplifting funky melodic focused vibe that’s full of harmonized vocoders and carnival trumpets reminiscing the last days of summer and the other is our rumpa stumpa high energy, break your neck weapon which is our take on the sound of the cold London nights.”

We were also able to catch up with Jaded and have a sneak peak into some of the equipment / instruments currently being used by the trio – which doesn’t happen often!

Prophet OB6 – “We used this lush analogue synth for the chords and stabs on Overtime. This is my go to machine for any pads, chords and atmospheric stuff! Packs a real 80s punch! A holy unity of the Prophet and Oberheim technologies to open the gates of heaven or hell depending on how you use it. Jaded supply their own entrancing and infectious vocals, and escalate that vibrant atmosphere with buoyant horns, and open-bottomed percussion elements aplenty. Flipping the digital wax, the second half of the double A-side ‘Physically’ ups the pace and transports punters to the underground. A deep-bassline driven groove, that leans on garage elements and a quickened, disjointed vocal, to fashion an energetic club anthem.”

Neve 1073LB Mic Pre – “This preamp is the grandson of the legendary 1073 but in a 500 series rack! The original has been used on more hit records than anyone can imagine. Once combined with a half-decent mic it produces super clean warm vocals that hit you in the face. This was used for Teo’s vocals with a simple no-nonsense Shure SM7B Mic. Good enough for MJ, good enough for us mate.”

UA Apollo – “This Lil guy doesn’t get enough credit sometimes. It’s the machine that’s always there ready to capture everything with the highest quality and comes with no headaches. It has such a wide range of latency-free plugins to record through that you might have to remortgage your nan’s house once you get a taste of it cos you would want all of them. Tread carefully or you’ll be buying emulations of 60s/70s analog gear for eternity. Maybe you can display them in your metaverse in the future.”

Overtime / Physically” is out now!”

What happens when you mix the best ingredients of synth wave, 80s avant-garde, electro-clash and house nuances? The answer to this question is given by Computerbandit from Europe, who landed a viral hit with his unique sound on Instagram with “You are digital” and gives us a glimpse into his well-equipped and cozy studio. This is also where his latest single “Popper, Punks & Porsche Drivers” was created. Let’s go.

Roland Juno 106 Synthesizer

Keep it simple! The Juno 106 is not a modulation monster but always asserts itself very well in the mix. No matter if bass, pads or lead sounds, it always has an authentic and powerful sound with 80s character. Of course, this always comes in handy in my productions with influences from the synthwave genre. I generally like devices that are limited in their possibilities. So you can concentrate on the essential and not be distracted by infinite possibilities. The motto – less is more – applies fully to the Juno.

Sequential OB6 Synthesizer

Love at second sight! At first I found the overtone rich basic sound a bit disturbing but it turned out that it harmonizes very well with my other devices due to its special 12dB SEM filter. For me once again the realization that the solo sound of a synthsizer still says nothing about how it integrates into your own productions. For me personally the best “new” synth currently on the market.

Nord Lead 4 Synthesizer

My Swiss Army Knife! Despite the digital design, the Nord Lead 4 cannot be replaced by any plugin for me. As a self-confessed NORD fan, I especially like the direct usability and the crystal clear sound in the upper mids. It can definitely sound digital too, but given enough attention and time, it can hold a candle to many an analog synth. In fact, it’s the unit in my studio that really gets used in every production.

Orban 424a Compressor/Limiter

For me, the Orban 424a is a compressor with a strong sonic character of its own. From subtle compression to alienation of audio material, everything is possible with it. I like to use it to process groups or the master bus and to achieve a certain “crunch” factor.

Audio Technica ATH-R70x Headphones

My Audio technical ATH-R70x headphones are an essential part of my everyday studio life. I have always loved using headphones for work, and this model is my absolute favorite. I had tried a lot of headphones at the time in all price ranges but it won out. The wearing comfort and especially its neutrality and linearity are awesome.

Multi talented man of the moment and Colombia’s hottest export right now, Felipe Gordon, is about to drop his Clasico EP on Brooklyn’s Razor-N-Tape Reserve Imprint.  Ahead of the release, he talks us through where the magic happens, in his studio at home in Bogota.

Multivox Multiecho

Well, this is a super rare tape echo I found recently in an audio market in downtown Bogotá. I was able to fix the whole mechanism and change the tape and now it is one of the secret weapons of the studio, is amazing for guitars, vocals, and synthesizers, it has this dark vibe, it’s lovely!

Korg Polysix

Well, this is one of the synths I always wanted when I Iwas younger, it was Korg’s answer to the success of the Juno 106. It’s an amazing analog vintage poly-synth, which I have to accept is my main thing when it comes to digging for studio hardware. I love Korg’s chord mode on this model and the Poly 61 which I own too. It’s lovely for house music <3

Fender Jazz Bass

I bought this bass back in 2019 when I was touring in the US. It has the right action, and it feels super smooth. I’ve been playing only for 2 years now but I’m completely in love with what you can achieve with the right tone. Also, I’m a huge fan of playing everything in my own tracks and making basslines is super fu. I’ve been using it like crazy and it’s one of my favorite pieces of gear in the studio.

Yamaha MT3X

I bought this one in Germany on a European tour. I always wanted to try making my mixes on a tape format machine. I’m after a reel to reel now but the sound of the cassette tape is totally different. It’s brighter and it has a lot of compression in my opinion. I’ve been using this one for all my remixes and some of the tracks of my album were mixed on it too. It’s a lo-fi vintage feeling <3

Boss KM40

This one is pretty rare. This is a mixer BOSS made back in 1979 specially for their drum machines and synthesizers. It looks like Chernobyl equipment because of those beautiful vintage knobs. It has this AMAZING built in distortion which I’ve used A LOT on all of my acid tracks. The 303 sounds like a bull! They are pretty rare but there’s a new company making a clone called PRO2, I’ve seen Ian Pooley using it!

-Felipe Gordon

Felipe Gordon released his ‘Clasico EP’ on Razor-N-Tape December 10th.

Turn it up & enjoy!

Following hot on the heels of the brilliant collab release with Shur-I-Kan, the man like Milton Jackson steps up for his first solo outing for Freerange since 2009. With just a couple of recent and forthcoming releases for Closer To Truth and Housewax, we welcome the Scotsman back with open arms as he delivers a five track EP which we’re sure you’ll agree has been well worth the wait!

As one of the UK’s most respected deep house producers, Milton Jackson lets us into his studio for a sneak at his most important pieces of kit.

Ahead of this stellar release, we got a chance to peer into the work-space of this magic maker!

Genuine Audio Summing Mixer and Alesis 3630

The Genuine Audio Summing mixer I’ve had for many years. I bought it off a guy who made it himself in Berlin. It’s got loads of Stereo and Mono inputs and I can run all my inputs into there and it also has a nice send for using a Bus Compressor plus a record out back into the Soundcard. I run 2 soundcards concurrently: one is a Prism Sound Lyra (borrowed from my friend Andrew Pirie) which runs into the 3630 in parallel with the output from my UAD soundcard which goes direct into the summing mixer. Not sure if that’s the correct way to go about things but it sounds pretty good.

Roland RS-202 Strings Keyboard

I bought this about 15 years ago and then sold it to Al Kent. He’s very kindly let me borrow it back again for a while. Beautiful eerie/crackly string sounds, I use it on pretty much every track I do. It has a nice filter and Chorus plus no MIDI so you have to play it live which I like.

EMU 6400

I’m using this all the time now – love the sound and the workflow it forces onto you. 3 of the tracks on my latest Freerange EP are fully from this sampler. It was quite challenging initially but it gets your head out of the DAW.

Dynaudio BM5as

I got these solely off the back of a Radio Slave interview in which he said he uses them. I think everyone who bought them got them off the back of that interview. I hope he got some royalties from Dynaudio!

-Milton Jackson

Milton Jackson releases his ‘House Arrest EP’ on Freerange Records 3rd December.

Turn it up & enjoy!
