Rebeca Macias, better known as Rivka M, brings out the dark techy sounds when she mixes and produces.

Rivka M has been a key figure in the Baja California, México scene for several years — throwing  events in Ensenada and Tijuana, and also dabbling into San Diego — her most recent party series, Who’s Who, has garnered much respect in the region. Previous WH8’s guests include many greats: dOP, Doc Martin, Jimpster, Hoj, MANIK, Halo, Métrika, Brian Cid, Bill Patrick, Dewalta, Phil Weeks, PillowTalk, Sunshine Jones, and many more local Baja and San Diego studs.

Aside from the parties, Rivka M has been running her own record label, Glauben Records, alongside fellow Baja Californian, Machino, since 2014; and has featured music from the likes of Butane, Jay Tripwire, Machino, and Rivka M herself.

Constantly hustling, Rivka M is perfect match for the our West Coast Podcast series. Enjoy!

Interview with Martyn Rocha

How did you initially get into DJing and house music? Do you recall a specific moment of inspiration or was it an evolution?
I do not have a specific moment in mind, since I was a child I liked Michael Jackson very much without knowing what kind of genre it was, I had a uncle who listened to electronic music and always bought electronic music collection cassettes and I really enjoyed the sounds, they gave me a great mental trip and made me think of pretty wonderful things. It was until 1999 when I began to know more about the genre, especially trance that predominated at that time a little more, it was until 2002 in high school that a friend had a DJ equipment and invited me to play at his house with a Numar CDN-88 which was the one I learned to mix with. I think it was evolution since I do not have a specific moment where I can’t point out myself as a dj. My passion for music and being surrounded by it, has made me fall in love all over again

What’s the scene like in Tijuana and Baja? How has the city evolved?
Talking about the scene in Tijuana takes us many years ago, the movement began in 1996, the scene has had many ups and downs during its history where the scene falls and rises again, but in the last 5 years the scene has grown quite in all aspects, in 2013 there were fewer events, less public and people was interested in different things.. Little by little, promoters and electronic music clubs arrived that have greatly promoted the movement of electronic music and have made Tijuana an exquisite public for any DJ that visits us.

Do you have any residencies? What parties/clubs in TJ would you recommend? What about restaurants?
Currently I’m a resident at Wherehouse, one of the most prestigious clubs in the northwest of the country. There are many upcoming festivals like Fronterizo fest, featuring Guy Gerber, Claptone and many more international artists. We also have the annual festivals in Baja California, such as Ekinox Fest and Liquid Summer, which have been going on for the longest. Who’s Who’s events in Ensenada which I like it a lot, the 24/7 Hot summer annual Sunday party that is already becoming tradition, and of course the end of the year party  and anniversary of Mindscapes that are also some of the most anticipated parties of the year. In Tijuana we have clubs for all kinds of public, if you want to have a beer at a good price with good music in 3 different areas we have the Mezcalera / Mija and Picnic, if you want to have a nice drink prepared with mezcal and good cocktails in a more intimate place we have the Tinieblo, If you want to dance in a cool place we have the deck of Deck22, if you want to dance disco with some good tacos we have the new bar Esquivel that was recently inaugurated and if you want intense party then you definitely have to go to Wherehouse, each place has its charm and its public so if you are looking for a party, without a doubt you will find it.

What inspired you to create Mindscapes?
My main inspiration was the love towards music and wanting to contribute something to our city. Another important reason was that in Tijuana we were very limited to what clubs and promoters offered to DJs, very low fees, low chances to play etc. For many years I been managing my own dj and sound equipment. I remember that the idea of making my first party was to do something different, in a different place, so I made my first party with local Djs and sky lanterns. It wasn’t complicated at all since I had all the equipment with turntables and the DJs were my friends. They all supported me, it really turned out well, everybody had a great time including myself. The same people who supported me in the first one encouraged me to keep doing more parties so I continued with the second, third and many more. Mindscapes grew so much, made good relationships with the agencies and the electronic music movement started growing more and more. I’ve always thought that Mindscapes stands where it does because of all the friends who supported assisting to the events, because without them we would never have reached where we have, we are a great team and every person who goes to my parties has a very important value for me, it means a lot.

What’s on the horizon for you the remainder of 2018 and beyond?
At the beginning of 2018 I stopped the Mindscapes project for an unknown time to focus on other things, the last party was on New Years of 2017.

Now I been helping new promoters to organize parties and encouraging new talent to play and start somehow in the music world. I also want to retake my way into producing this year since I always liked making music but never transcended.

I have many invitations to play in other cities and the Mexican republic, I think it is time to take them and go out because before i wasn’t able to due to so much work I had. This year is looking good so far since there’s a lot of good plans in mind.

Dream gig…
Playing at a Loveparade was one of my dreams for many years.

What’s one track that’s lighting up dance floors for you right now?
I think Joeski’s “Life Changes” it’s working well for me at the moment, people dance to it every time !

Tell us about your mix…
It’s a nice set to listen, soft and enveloping sounds, it’s a combination of progressive house with deep house, I’ve always liked telling stories in my sets since it’s a good way to express myself and this time is not the exception, as you can see like all other stories It begins  soft, then we go a little more intense and  end up relaxed, the rest I leave it to your imagination and I hope you like it

Drink of choice…
I haven’t had any alcohol in 8 years, I rather drink water or cranberry juice.

You can catch Reek on almost every weekend in TJ playing all the top clubs like Wherehouse, La Mija, Deck22, and Margaritas Village opening for artists like D’Julz, Jimpster, &ME, and Shaun Reeves. He’s definitely the go-to for groovy tunes and flawless mixing–perfect to get the party started.

Reek is a good friend of MI4L since we’re a hop, skip, and a jump away from México, so we’re happy to feature him on our Hometown Heroes series. Enjoy!

Tijuana’s finest artist, Soul Of Hex, has popped una cereza importante–with original music out on Dirt Crew; an EP for Jimspter’s Freerange Records and his 50th release on Delusions Of Grandeur, a two-part vinyl compilation; and playing Boiler Room–things are going extremely well.

Next month the young producer begins his indefinite exodus to one of the many Meccas of dance music — Berlin. There lies a nice Spring and Summer schedule of gigs; including Hamburg, London, Barcelona, Gran Canaria, Moscow, and of course, Berlin.

We’re always ecstatic to watch the rise of our friends in this ultra fast-paced, over-saturated music industry; it means there is something very special about them.

Interview with Soul Of Hex

How did you first get introduced to underground dance music? What inspired you to turn your fixation into a profession?
Hello there! Well first I started making chiptune (nintendo-ish) music on my laptop when I was 13… I used to make 8-bit covers of Daft Punk, New Order, and other artists I loved at the time. So, thanks to myspace and blogs, I discovered a lot of artists of that genre, and more. I was in a project called circa 2007 KRY-LON with my neighbor (Ricardo Mejía), which it was mostly inspired on the french house/electro sound of that era and people started to book us when were 15 (sometimes illegally) in clubs and festivals in Tijuana, Los Angeles, Mexicali, Mexico City, and more. So I think I’ve been in the underground dance music scene in general since I was very young. Eventually, my musical taste changed through the years, I started digging deep into House music, thanks to Motor City Drum Ensemble’s Raw Cuts and ‘’Pump Up the Volume’’ documentary… and after getting some knowledge I created the label Vicario Musique Recordings alongside 4004 and Damian of Wherehouse. It has always been a hobby, but right now I’m doing this full time as I successfully finished my university career on Communications almost 2 years ago. I’m always thinking about music all day long, and giving myself goals and planning my future. I really love it! Music helped me to get through the best and worst times of my life. And it will be there forever! So even if I go deaf I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t keep Dj’ing of course but I would continue composing music haha!

What has been the most exciting turning point of your career so far?
I have 2. When I played Boiler Room in Mexico City. And getting my music signed to Jimpster’s Freerange Records.

What is the scene like in Tijuana? How does where you live influence your music? If we were visiting your hometown, what clubs and/or parties would we want to check out? What about restaurants?
I think right now the electronic music scene in Tijuana is strong. I mean in general I really like the city. The food is great, I love the weather and people are very fun. So I’m always in a good mood. I think that reflects in my productions, I think my music is very happy haha! There are a few venues that held electronic music events like Wherehouse, La Mija, and Margaritas Village. I love playing at those three. But definitely everything changed after we founded Wherehouse, (now running full-time by my friend Damian) it’s the only club that hosts 100% house & techno events and going after hours. International & national talent coming every week, oh yes!

Hmm! There are a lot of good restaurants in Tijuana… I don’t even know where to start haha. I really like Kokopelli,  Humo, Izakaya, Villa Saverios, Tacos el Yaqui in Rosarito, the classic Corriente Cevicheria Nais and those ‘’nameless’’ 24/7 birria Tacos of the infamous Zona Norte of Tijuana, epic stuff.

What advice would you give to an aspiring producer trying to make their mark on the world? How much of it is being at the right place at the right time?
I would say: Get your homework done! I encourage you to work on the quality of your artistic output! Improve to the max your audio editing skills, music theory knowledge, composition, etc… if you think your music is good then try to send it to labels and if you get rejected… never surrender! Then do it yourself and put that music out. Don’t believe the hype. If you want to grow, give yourself some goals. Think BIG! Music is a business for sure, but do it because you really love it (but never for the money). And most of all… be patient. About being at the right place… sometimes you can be really lucky knowing someone, but I mean, we have the internet! Social media is a very powerful tool to get in touch with the right person. Music speaks by itself, when it’s good, it’s good. Simple as that.

What’s on the horizon for Soul Of Hex in 2016 and beyond?
I’m putting out a track called ‘’Jynmu’’ for the 20 years of Freerange Records Compilation alongside dope artists like KiNK, Detroit Swindle, Kuniyuki and Jimpster of course! ‘’Body Shine (to Lawrence Philpot)’’ a disco cut dedicated to the Paradise Garage pioneer on Quintessentials 50th release (Session Victim & Ponty Mython also in the release). ‘’Mindeasy EP’’ on FACES Records where I showcase my bass slap skills haha… and the next VA’s ‘’Straight from the Wherehouse vol.2 & vol.3’’ with Roman Rauch, Moony Me, NY*AK & Mark Hand, Loz Goddard, Harry Wolfman, 4004, Guy Dee on my label Vicario. And… currently working on my album. I just announced ‘’The Eye Tour’’ where I’m playing Washington DC with Sticky Fingers,  Wherehouse Anniversary with Nina Kraviz, MANANA Festival in Santiago de Cuba, PAL Hamburg, Prince Charles in Berlin, Barcelona, Dewars Powerhouse in Moscow, Shake with SAFT in Gran Canaria, 20 Years of Freerange in London plus Leicester with the City Fly crew and a Vicario LTD showcase in St Petersburg just added.

Dream gig…
Ahhh would love to play at Panorama Bar in Berlin… Dekmantel festival in Amsterdam… hehe would love to have the chance.

Dream collab…
MOODYMANN!

Name one track that has been lighting up dance floors for you…
Anything from Leon Vynehall’s new album

Tell us about your mix…
I play 2 new Soul Of Hex tunes, new stuff from Leatherette on Ninja Tune, Leon Vynehall, 20 below repress on MCDE.  And some cool stuff from the crates… I hope you guys enjoy.

We met Ricardo Mejia when he was 17-years-old on a misty night in Tijuana. We were all at a house party in the TJ hills — foggy skyline in the backdrop, shimmering lights covering the hills that seem to melt into the sky above — and Ricardo playing the fun soundtrack on two small CDJ-300’s. It was a great night where we connected with our Mexican compadres and listened to jam after sweet jam from Ricardo. We’ll forever associate that special moment with a special kid… and his music.

Over 4 years later Ricardo is still going at it! Gigging all over Baja, producing his own original music, and resident DJ for event production collective and label — Beatness — run by fellow homie Cesar Coronado. He has also recently played on a couple of our own dance floors: Lovelife’s A New Year of Love NYE party featuring tINI in San Diego and ¡Viva Séxico! rooftop party with Maxxi Soundsystem and Thee Cool Cats in TJ. You can catch Ricardo on the line-up for the upcoming Music is 4 Lovers dance party in Tijuana with DJ Tennis — Saturday March 7th at WhereHouse. MORE INFO.

Ricardo is a quiet guy who expresses himself best behind the decks. He has quickly risen as a local favorite of ours so this Hometown Heroes is especialmente especial! Check it out!

Interview with Ricardo Mejia:

¡Hola, amigo! How’s the music scene going in Tijuana?

The music scene in Tijuana is growing in many ways. There’s more clubs and promoters that support the local talent as well as booking DJs from around the globe. El Tinieblo Mezcal Room is an example of that as well as Mous Tache, WhereHouse, and Mindscapes.

How did you get into DJing and producing house music?

As I was growing up my musical influences were changing. I stared listening to house music because it had more rhythm, and liked the way it made people move. It got my attention. I fell in love with the whole scene and began to produce my own music and playing it for others. I wanted to feel that joy of playing my tracks and then seeing the crowd’s reaction.

Tell us about Beatness…

We’re a group of friends united by a passion for music and the dance floor
.

How’s the music production going? Any labels you plan to release on in 2015?

I’m surrounded by talented people who make me give my 110%. Recently I’ve been working on collabs with my closest friends: Cesar Coronado, Bejerk Peterson, Mario Armanino, and David Frias. For the moment there’s no labels on my mind, just having fun making music.

What gigs do you have coming up that you’re excited about?

Casa De Piedra @ La Rumorosa

What’s your favorite jam you’re playing out at the moment?

Drink of choice…

Rum!

Cheers!

[Video] Lovelife has been turning frowns upside-down since their abrupt emergence this past summer. In a city swamped by pop music clubs, Lovelife is the long-awaited fruit beckoned from a starving scene of San Diegan Lovers. Their unique promotional brand focuses on the innate things in life; peace, love, and lots and lots of sex! Delivering grade A talent like Danny Daze, Damian Lazarus, Subb-an, DJ T., Tanner Ross, Slow Hands, Lazaro Casanova, Superfreq with Mr.C, Tiger & Woods, and their most recent party with Tale Of Us. Tomorrow they’re celebrating their 10th gathering of Love with Boston super duo Soul Clap. Slowing down their swift ascendance toward the top doesn’t seem to be an viable option as future bookings include Wolf + Lamb, Lee Foss, and a spankalicious disco jam down in Tijuana, Mexico with Tiger & Woods live.
