Interview with Joi N’Juno
Joi N’ Juno is about to drop his full length album on Canopy Records. Real name David Baluteau earned his stripes as founder, composer and lead singer of French drum & bass-electro-punk band ‘La Phaze’. Now focusing on a new chapter in his creative journey, Joi N’Juno serves up an album that is fresh, funky and mature.  He we get to know a little more about the artist Joi N’Juno and his stunning new album that is sure to put a smile on your face.

Where are you based and what are you doing today?

I live in Lorient a small city of Britanny in France. I used to live for 8 years in Barcelona and moved quite recently back to France.

I spend my days mostly in my studio, this is the place where I feel the most happy and creative and the acoustic is very good which is pretty pleasant and reassuring.

What is your earliest musical memory?

It comes from the sound of a guitar played by my father, he was sitting on my bed and playing something, its a vague memory but I think it was a song by Cat Stevens

Is there an album that sticks in your mind from when you were a kid?

My mother used to have good tastes in music so I remember that I couldn’t stopped listening to “Hotter Than July” from Stevie Wonder and especially his amazing single called Master Blaster.

Who are you musical heroes when you were growing up?

Without any doubt, it was The Clash. I was fan of Punk and reggae music. And then I started to experiment with Keyboards and computers and electronic music became my passion.

Who do you think is making great music at the moment?

Quite a lot of very good producers these days, I would like to big up my friend Hotmood who is also preparing his first album.

I like Diogo Strausz music too, Opolopo is a maestro with experimentation. I dig Kiko Navarro too, I hear a lot of music from very different genres to be honest

What is the most recent album you’ve purchased and why do you love it?

I bought a record called Marijata from Pat Thomas last time I went to Lisbon. Fun fact few month later I was meeting him in studio in London.

Life is great sometimes 🙂

What inspires you to create music on a daily basis?

I think its the love and the passion that I still have for making songs from scratch. Every time I step into the studio I feel the excitement, it’s like embarking on an unknown destination. The more I grow the more I feel the need to create music.

Who do you think is one of the greatest musicians of our time?

Miles Davis for sure even though he’s not alive, his legacy is incredible. I still go back to his music and learn something new each time.

How did you first connect with Canopy Records?

I was starting to work on the writing session of the album and a very good friend of mine recommended me to get in touch with Canopy regarding my music style. I then contacted the label on Instagram and Emmanuel first reaction was to let me know that his agenda was full until 2025! He asked me to send a link eventually to listen to it.

The day after I had almost 20 messages from him ahaha!

Give us a brief roundup of your new album?

It’s an album of pure joy and liberation. It goes back to my childhood and connect with my musical roots, then it travel over the years until now. It’s under influences of Afrobeat and Disco Hi-Life as well as Tropical Funk and House music with some juicy analog synths and instruments. I sing on almost every songs and play all the instruments except the Horns which are my signature sound too.

It’s an album where I have created my own language which is also connected to the inner soul of a children, it’s full of positive energy, I wanted to make a record that will pass the test of time and bring a large smile on people face!

What else can we hope to see from Joi N Juno this year?

I have beenvery productive in studio and plan to release 2 EPs with Canopy records, one with Kaleta and one with Pat Thomas.

There are also some remixes and few surprises to come but it’s a work in progress situation right now.

What is the last book that you read?

“The Tartar Steppe”  by Dino Buzatti

What is your favourite film?

It’s an old film a masterpiece “Le Samouraï” by Jean-Pierre Melville with Alain Delon

Tell us something we might never know about you?

I can not only a good cook with music, I can be very creative in a real kitchen!

-Joi N’Juno

And we’re back with another smooth & groovin’ LoveBath from rising deep house creator Sable Blanc!

Sable Blanc’s musical roots formed within the spheres of Jazz and through drumming lessons, and upon discovering house music in his teens he quickly sought to manifest his array of interests into a concise yet wide reaching musical output. Blanc brings together the sensibilities of Jazz laden grooves and melodic patterns with the up-tempo energies of House in such a way as to always provide the feeling of forward thinkingness, but never losing sight of the smaller things that make life worthwhile. In his own words, his music is ‘home-listening’ in feel, and the grooves and keys find their way into every corner of homes in which listeners press play on one of his records.

Back again, two weeks in a row with another cranking LoveBath mix, this time from Rayowa!

Seamlessly blending Disco, Funk, Soul and RNB, Rayowa aka Reece Baker is self-taught multi-instrumentalist DJ and Producer who jumps aboard The Disco Express with his beautiful new single, ‘In The Sunshine’.

Inspired by legendary acts such as Change, Rene & Angela, Chic, SOS Band, Kashif, Loose Ends, and many more, Rayowa’s music feels both classic and timeless yet modern. ‘In The Sunshine’ is the perfect soundtrack for your summer

Interview with Rayowa

Thanks for taking the time to talk Reece. Where are you this moment and how are you spending your day?

No problem at all, I’m currently in front of my computer at home today, I’ll be practising my instruments, hitting the gym, going for my daily walk that helps to clear my mind. Then I’ll spend the rest of the day working on some music.

Where are you from, where were you born?

I grew up in Basildon, Essex and was born at St John’s hospital in Chelmsford, which I don’t think actually exists anymore.

Where are you based these days?

I’m still living in Basildon, it’s pretty close to everything. I can get into London for meetings and sessions in 40 minutes, but equally, I’m surrounded by beautiful countryside and I’m 20 minutes from Southend seafront.

What do you love about where you are living?

I’m really close with my family and we all live within 5 minutes of each other which is great.

How long have you been making music?

I’ve been making music since I was 14. It’s always been the dream for as long as I can remember. Coincidently, with the announcement of them getting back together, my eldest brother Dan and I were avid Oasis fans when we were young,  and our first band was called Baker.

What was your first step into the industry ?

My brother Dan, Luke and I were in a band called Courts before Rayowa. I’d say that was the first project I was involved with that had any significant moments. We had a lot of great fun in that band; we secured our first deals in this project and it taught us a lot about the industry.

What was your first release?

As Rayowa it was a song called ‘Better Man’ which still to this day I’m super proud of. It’s just about to hit 3 million streams on Spotify, was featured On New Music Friday, and I regularly get sent videos of people shopping or out eating and its being played. It’s a great feeling to know that something you have created / written resonates with people like that. Have a listen!

Define the sound of Rayowa in a few words..

It’s a blend of Soul, Funk, Disco & RnB. I’ve always strived to write music that feels timeless.

Rayowa is also a band right?

Yeah, so I took Rayowa to the stage with my brothers and friends as a 9 piece band. Sold out the debut show at Moth Club and the subsequent shows after that which was mind-blowing. I never could have anticipated how amazing those shows were going to be and I’m really looking forward to getting Rayowa back on the stage next year!

What’s the most recent gig you’ve had?

The most recent show was on The Avant Garden stage at Secret Garden Party, it was absolutely incredible. When we first walked on stage to setup there were a few people there. But by the end it was rammed front to back and the whole place was jumping. The energy and love was unbelievable.

What do you love about playing live?

It has to be the love from fans. Hearing the songs I’ve written being sung back by the crowd definitely has choked me up a few times.

What are some of the challenges of being in an ensemble?

It’s great to be honest, the only challenge really can be logistically, organising a 9 piece can have its stresses, but generally it’s pretty plain sailing. It’s always worth it when the shows are as amazing.

Who are your influences in the music that you make?

I’m influenced by so many artists: Change, The S.O.S band, Quincy Jones, George Michael, Loose Ends, Chic. Music with soul!

What do you feel has been your most notable release, which one made the biggest impact?

‘Better Man’, which is more of a disco track influenced by the sounds of Chic. The B.B & Q Band etc. That live recording always makes the crowd hit the roof!

You’ve warmed up for Chic right?

Yeah, that was definitely a landmark moment. It was something that I’d dreamed of doing when I started this project, to tick that off the list in such a short period of time is amazing. Walking behind the stage and seeing their drum kit and Nile Rodgers amp was pretty surreal and their set was of course spectacular.

Who are the other artists that you follow right now?

Jafunk makes sick modern disco music and I’ve really been enjoying Another Taste as well, their production is beautifully authentic.

How did you connect with The Disco Express?

The label owner Tom reached out to me about releasing some music through The Disco Express. They’re smashing it all over the globe and releasing some great music. I’m really happy to have joint TDE family.

Give us a roundup of your new release In The Sunshine and tell us about your inspiration for this track?

‘In The Sunshine’ is the slowest record I’ve released, and it was inspired by the jazzier soulful RnB funk sound. A big influence of this record was  Quincy Jones’ rendition of ’Summer In The City’  which I actually referenced in the lyrics on the bridge. The smoothness, the Rhodes, the soulful female vocals. I’d probably say the vocal style was influenced by Mary Davis’ of  The SOS Bands delivery and soulfulness, the vocals in this record I feel are very 80’s RnB.

What are you working on next that you can share?

My next release out on The Disco Express is an upbeat soulful disco track that I’m incredibly proud of. It’s the first love song that I’ve written and was influenced by the sound of Rene & Angela, Chic & Sister Sledge. It took me a fair amount of time to finish that record, so I’m really excited for people to finally hear it.

What is one of your most memorable moments from this last year?

Seeing the love that ‘In The Sunshine’ has been receiving has been a big highlight of my year. I’d spent a huge amount of time in the studio writing it, producing it, listening to it over and over again to the point of doubt. Then to put it out and it receive the support it has been really reassuring, it means the world to me.

After a bit of a break, we’re back with episode number 116 from the mastermind behind the Ruínas collective and the Whoopee party series, Black Pomade!

Black Pomade is a DJ and producer originally from Milan (Italy), now calling New York home after leaving his mark in Lisbon’s growing scene.

Heavily inspired by the NY Disco scene and the Chicago House pioneers, he’s made a name for himself with a melting pot of analog synths, groovy basslines, and syncopated beats. His sets are a proper journey through House, Disco, and Acid records, always leaving the dance floor buzzing with energy and big grins all around.

From 2021 to 2023, he held a residency at MusicBox Lisbon, bridging the gap between the Italian and Portuguese scenes. Regularly gracing the decks in Lisbon and Milan, he’s also taken his sound across Europe and Asia, playing in cities like Bangkok, Seoul, Tokyo, Osaka, Vienna, and Sofia, and sharing the stage with legends like Emmanuelle, Kamma&Masalo, Hunee, Don Carlos, Josey Rebelle, and the iconic Nicky Siano. He’s contributed to top podcast series like SlothBoogie, Discoteca, and Histoires de Piscines, and appeared on radio shows from Melbourne to Pittsburgh, Skopje, São Paulo, and Ibiza.

Black Pomade released music on Last Forever Records, Rollover Milano Anything Goes, Stereo Ferment, Modmotif, Dig This Way Records, Youngbloods, and on vinyl for Martino Edits and Windmill Re-Edits. In 2023 his remix for Sontag Shogun was featured on the Apple TV show “Platonic”, meanwhile he launched the vinyl-only edit series Manzo Edits and for 2024 he has upcoming releases scheduled on Whopee Rec and Wilson Records.

We’re thrilled to be back with another dope & sexy LoveBath mix!

After a bit of a break, we’re back with episode number 115 courtesy of Nightset!

Sydney jazz house duo Nightset is the collaborative project of Sonny Grin and Kats, their trademark sound blending elements of nu jazz, house, and electronica with wild live improvisation. Quickly marking their ground as one of Australia’s most exciting emerging acts, Alec Brinsmead (Sonny) and Casper Trop (Kats)  are both working session musicians and are proven staples in the current Sydney live music scene.

Nightset’s latest release sees them team up with Chilean / Australian soul singer and guitarist Josueì Vilches on ‘Diamond Eyes.’ The track is a buttery smooth, soulful house joint that strikes the right balance between live instrumentation and tasteful electronic production. The effortless RnB tones of Josué’s vocal, sits on top of a soulful house beat resulting in an undeniable feel-good listening experience, while the Original Mix strikes the perfect balance between polished, slick production and organic instrumentation. With memorable melodies and a laidback house feel, this track highlights Josué’s vocal prowess, with his intricate harmonies that float above the silky-smooth dancefloor groove. The Live was actually recorded in one single take at Bodega Studio’s in Sydney, showcasing these three musicians’ certain talent and combined creative chemistry, and breathing fresh life into the original composition. In contrast, The Dub is the perfect party starter with its extended house grove that is sure to bring the dancers to the floor. Here Josué’s vocal has plenty of time to shine alongside vibrant disco riffs and lashings of playful percussion.

We’re back with the 114th episode of the LoveBath, this time from Nenor!

Israeli producer Nenor recently delivered a 4-tracker of impeccably produced dancefloor weapons for his second outing on Razor-N-Tape. Since releasing on Moodyman’s legendary Mahogani label a few years back and as part of duo Rabo & Snob, Nenor has been honing his craft in the studio, and now puts his skills on full display on an EP that ranges from the poppy house of ‘How Can I Be Free’ to the deep Larry Heard-esque textures of ‘Do You Remember’,  and the gritty underground bangers of the title track ‘Work That’. He did indeed take his time on this beautifully crafted record, and the result is something quite special.
